Made from straw, Wara-zaiku (藁細工) is a traditional Japanese craft and has been practiced in Japan for centuries. Deeply rooted in the Shinto tradition, straw ropes and amulets have long served as symbols of purity, protection and connection to the divine. Even today, they are found in shrines, sacred trees and entrances to homes, marking the boundaries between the spiritual and the mundane. Since Warazaiku is made from fresh straw, it is natural for the color to change from green to golden over time.

The craft has its roots in Japan’s agricultural societies, where rice was a central part of life – not just as food but also as a material. In the remote mountains of Miyazaki Prefecture, where rice is grown in steep terraced fields, a small number of artisans continue this tradition. They grow their own straw, harvest it by hand, and weave each shape slowly and deliberately – shapes that have long held other meanings: cranes and turtles for long life, sacred knots for harmony, ropes to mark sacred spaces. These are more than decorative objects. They are fragments of living culture.

"A good luck charm to wish for family security. The two ropes, one on the left and the other on the right, represent a strong bond."
