The craft has its roots in Japan’s agricultural societies, where rice was a central part of life – not just as food but also as a material. In the remote mountains of Miyazaki Prefecture, where rice is grown in steep terraced fields, a small number of artisans continue this tradition. They grow their own straw, harvest it by hand, and weave each shape slowly and deliberately – shapes that have long held other meanings: cranes and turtles for long life, sacred knots for harmony, ropes to mark sacred spaces.
These are more than decorative objects. They are fragments of living culture.
