The end of a whisk

In some modern tea ceremonies outside of Japan, the tradition of lighting the chasen (matcha whisk) on fire has been adopted as a way of honoring the whisk and showing gratitude for its use in the preparation of matcha. This ceremony is sometimes called 'chasen kuyo', which translates to 'chasen commemoration'.

What was born from the earth in a bamboo thicket must return there as soil. The flame is set to the core of the whisk and as the fire works its way down, the sprouts close like petals. The flower becomes a bud again – and then soil. It is a beautiful moment. You should also treat yourself to it when that moment comes, for all the moments you had together.
